The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Assumption of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven, also known as the Mexico City Cathedral, is the main Catholic church in Mexico City. It was built from 1573 to 1813 on the site of an Aztec sacred area, near the Templo Mayor. The cathedral integrates various architectural styles, such as Gothic, Baroque, Churrigueresque, and Neoclassical, due to its long construction time of almost 250 years. Many artists and craftsmen from the viceroyalty worked on its construction, resulting in a rich interior with ornaments, paintings, sculptures, and furniture.
