Chistmas at the Cathedral - Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus, 2024
Last night, the concert series had the pleasure of welcoming the Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus for a wonderful Christmas concert. The ensemble, led by Dr. Julian Ackerley, is preparing for his retirement at the end of this current season, a milestone after more than four decades of dedicated leadership to this talented group.
They performed a varied and captivating selection of Christmas carols that truly uplifted the spirit of the season. After a brief introductory welcome by Bishop Gerald Kicanas, I had the privilege of leading the chorus in procession to the sanctuary while I chanted the beautiful O Sapientia, marking December 17 as the beginning of the “O Antiphons,” which are traditionally prayed for a full seven days in preparation for Christmas. This solemn chant was followed by a lovely rendition of O Come, All Ye Faithful. Gréta Pásztor provided exceptional organ and piano collaboration, enhancing the musical experience significantly.
The treble choir delighted the audience with my version of Ave María in Spanish, which was deeply moving for me. Anna Wright contributed her talent with the violin in both the opening and closing solo sections of the Ave María. I also had the opportunity to perform two solos, one alongside the choir with Silent Night, and another with Joshua Vierra for the stirring O Holy Night. In the second half of the program, I invited both Anna and Joshua to join me in a special arrangement of Silent Night/Noche de Paz.
I am truly grateful for the support I received from many individuals; my heartfelt thanks go to both bishops, Edward Weisenburger and Gerald Kicanas, Sister Lois, Elizabeth Bollinger from the Catholic Foundation, and Arianna, Abigail, Jim, Miguel, and, of course, Mary Ann. Thank you all for making this event so special!
