Christmas at the Cathedral with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra
A few days ago, on a special evening that was filled with holiday spirit and joy, I had the honor of conducting the Tucson Symphony Orchestra at the annual Christmas at the Cathedral event, held at St. Augustine Cathedral in Tucson. This concert marked a milestone as it signaled the return of live performances to the cathedral after an extended hiatus due to the pandemic. It was a momentous occasion that brought together not only the talented musicians of the orchestra but also the extraordinary choral singers from the Diocese of Tucson, creating a truly collaborative effort that resulted in a program of traditional Christmas carols.
To enhance the performance even further, I had the privilege of inviting the exceptionally talented mezzosoprano, Diana Peralta, to join us on stage. Diana's voice, with its exquisite beauty and captivating presence, enraptured the audience as she delivered a soul-stirring interpretation of my composition, Ave Maria, which I had composed five years ago. Witnessing her heartfelt performance was a true highlight of the evening, and I am immensely grateful for her contribution to the overall success of the concert. Sing-alongs are an important part of this program, and I am thankful to Gregg Schockmann, from the Diocese of Phoenix, for providing organ accompaniment for the sing-alongs.
I would be remiss not to express my deepest gratitude to the Catholic Foundation and Rio Nuevo for their generous support, which played a vital role in bringing this magnificent event to life. Additionally, I extend my heartfelt appreciation to the dedicated staff of both the cathedral and the diocese, particularly Sr. Lois, Dcn. Mike, Sonya, Rachel, Rudy, Joe, and the ushers, whose unwavering assistance ensured the smooth organization and operation of the concert. Their dedication and commitment to excellence were instrumental in making Christmas at the Cathedral a resounding success.
As I reflect on this unforgettable experience, I am filled with a profound sense of gratitude and joy. It is truly heartwarming to witness the power of music in bringing people together and rekindling the spirit of community after such a challenging period. Hace unos días, en una velada especial llena de espíritu navideño y alegría, tuve el honor de dirigir la Orquesta Sinfónica de Tucson en el evento anual Navidad en la Catedral, que se llevó a cabo en la Catedral de San Agustín en Tucson. Este concierto marcó un hito ya que marcó el regreso de las presentaciones en vivo a la catedral después de una pausa prolongada debido a la pandemia.
